The Ghost of Peter Sellers

The Ghost of Peter Sellers official festival trailer
This feature length documentary has been receiving excellent reviews from film festivals around the world and rightly so.  Peter Medak directs his own story and sees one of my favourite storyteller-editors Joby Gee applying his inimitable edge and slant to the whole thing.  It’s worth a quick google to find out a bit more about it – it’s an amazing story and an excellent watch, giving an incredible insight into an extraordinary man and point in the movie industry in general, whilst never losing track of the very personal and emotional journey being taken by the Director.  In a tale filled with co-incidences, my dad was almost certainly on the island playing in a band at the time they were shooting the original film.
Check out the greek bazouki playing on this one – the booked musician was unable to make the session so I quickly sharpened up my chops and played it myself – like riding a bicycle, right?

‘Mad Professor meets Fab Four’ was the aim of the sound space of this score.  An insightful and irreverent adventure into an often overlooked period of the worlds most famous band featuring rare archive, eye-opening interviews and excellent animation.

A tense psychological thriller written and directed by the exceptional David Farr (who wrote The Night Manager and Hanna) and features excellent performances.  The Guardian just gave it four stars as have a number of other publications.

It’s always hard to describe a film, but image The Hand That Rocked The Cradle written by Pinter and directed by Polanski and you’re getting close.

The music features processed piano and string quartet (often playing fairly unbalancing sounds).  I worked hard on reflecting the internal states of the protagonists and am really pleased with how the music is intrinsically linked to the emotional state of the film and the mental state of the characters.

Ockham’s Razor are an extraordinary company performing what I would call ‘Post-Circus’.  A sort of very human physical theatre rooted in but not wed to the rigorous circus backgrounds they all boast.  The score is continuous throughout the 60 minute performance.  It is a collaboration and I am immensely proud of the interaction and emotive content that the music brings with the movement.  Check here for forthcoming performances and videos

I left the music very sparse and gave the top line to a high vocal, drenched in reverb, distant, ghostlike.  There is a width to the music even though it is sparse – rhodes piano, kick drum, reverbs, vocal.  I enjoyed keeping to very few elements, always paring back, leaving room for all the visual and emotional elements of the film.

A feature-length doc examining the effect of baby-loss of parents and their various ways of coping.  The score is made of broad, warm swathes of volume-swirled reverb-y electric guitar and various electronic detailing.  A very fine balance had to be found to support the stories without being relentlessly maudlin.  We needed a constant sense of hopefulness underpinning the music.

This is an extraordinary film.  The images are so cinematic that we knew from the outset that the music was going to have to step up from anything you might expect.  We tried various things out  but it really came to life when widescreen, almost sci-fi movie sounds were put against the pictures – that was the route we took and it works fantastically.

Old drum machines and mellotron – Really proud of this one too – credit to the director who gave me the chance to argue the toss on this concept.  Sounds like Jon Brion in a vintage electronic music shop and all the better for it
